Raising Monarch Butterflies

July 22, 2018

So it turns out we butterfly! Did you ever hear that as a verb before? Right now we have two little caterpillars (we can find out if they are male or female once they are butterflies) much smaller than a dime.

The six year old told me last year when we saw a caterpillar in the woods, ‘you know they are eating machines don’t you, dad?’ and it’s true! The eat and poop. Just like kids!

We have a 3x magnifying lens that the kids can easily study the caterpillars with; they’ve gone back several times during the day just to check them out.

They are looking forward to being able to handle the caterpillars (and then as they as pre-flight butterflies)

this caterpillar hatched the night before

it's really easy for the kids to watch him running around and eating already, the 3X magnifying glass was $2.99 in the walmart stationary/office supplies section…still too small for handling and not getting poor video of 🙂

We're an unschooling family in London, Ontario. Wherever we are, whatever we are doing, that's what they are learning right now. Children are able to absorb information while they play. Mine play all day long. #playResearchRepeat

I have some monarch caterpillars, too! I found a young milkweed plant with bunches of eggs on it, and I now have 7 or more little caterpillars. I found another one earlier, which had already entered the pupa stage. I’m so excited to be raising so many at once!
