Well, the 5yo says to his little sister, you’re officially a firefighter now.
Big day yesterday, we put out a fire! The 5yo smelled smoke first and we saw the ground burning. (when we got closer we could see it was all the wood chips at the base of the sign that were on fire)
I asked the kids if we should go put it out, they thought that was a good idea. i didn’t have the camera filming when we got there, but the fire was going all the way from the post (you can see the burn/smoke marks) out to the grass. it was a true fire that we had to walk around because of the heat it was putting out…it probably would have been contained and burned itself out on a typical day in it’s urban setting, but it was super windy (the flames sounded like BBQ flames when it’s windy!)
i told them to stand back at first so i could get it mostly out before they could help (i didn’t know how hot it was underneath and didn’t want them, you know, tripping in fire)
i let them shake their water bottles on it (to no avail, like i knew, but they wanted to do it)
it was lucky that the area that was burning could be used to smother itself, so i let the kids watch me push and stomp it out, 4 or 5 other guys showed up by this point and it was a team stomping (and water dousing)
there’s not a lot of smoke wisps shown in the video…
